Gilpin Grasslands Restoration Project

Building partnerships to maintain and restore the Gilpin Grassland’s health for people, ecosystems, and all species in Grand Forks.

The Gilpin Grassland Range is a unique area that holds many values for people in the Grand Forks community and beyond. Gilpin is also home to numerous species at risk. We have begun monitoring projects for some of these species.

Kettle River Tree Planting Project

We would like thank to thank Trees Canada and Majesta for their support in out tree planting project. We planted 1600 Balsam poplar trees along the Kettle River in Grand Forks and Boothman’s Provincial Park.

The planting of these trees will enhance habitat for birds species such as the threatened Lewis Woodpecker, the birds decline is because of a loss of nest trees. Decaying Balsam poplar are one of their favorite trees to nest in so we must ensure the replacement of these wildlife trees in Grand Forks. Trees in the riparian area also create a buffer between roads, agricultural areas, industrial areas and rivers. A healthy riparian area will also have shade trees to protect fish pools from rising summer temperatures especially in the low later summer flows.

We will continue to promote healthy riparian areas for the Kettle River and its watershed.
